GB Men’s Hockey Team In IPad Penalty Shoot-Out Controversy After Defeat By India

Great Britain’s men’s hockey team saw their Olympic campaign end in controversial heartache after they were beaten by 10-man India in a dramatic penalty shoot-out.

There were tense scenes during the shoot-out when Britain’s keeper Ollie Payne appeared to have an iPad with notes confiscated by an official as India stepped up to take their second penalty, following protests from opposition players.

Goalkeeper in the women’s team Maddie Hinch memorably kept her shoot-out notes near the goal as she saved four penalties as Britain beat the Netherlands to win gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

But Team GB had themselves to blame as they spent much of the match at the Yves-du-Manoir Stadium searching for a winner against a depleted India side forced to play 40 minutes with a player down after Amit Rohidas was sent off for striking Will Calnan in the face.

With the match tied at 1-1 after Britain failed to convert a flurry of late chances during normal time before falling short in the shoot-out.

Conor Williamson skied his effort over before Phil Roper saw his effort smothered by PR Sreejesh, India’s goalkeeper whose heroics throughout the match kept his side in the match.

India, the bronze medallists from Tokyo, converted all four of their chances to progress to a successive Olympic semi-final, as Britain’s hopes of a first men’s Olympic medal since their gold in Seoul in 1988 ended in crushing disappointment.
